Thank You Thank You Thank You!! for the generous support our parish continues to give to our three young parishioners Arthur Cavallin, Alina Tassone & Alex Catalano who are continuing to fund raise for their Kenya Exposure Trip. Just over $1000 was raised with the sale of homemade Christmas decorations and tickets sold for the Christmas Concert/Sing along. A good time was had by all. It was a great way to end the Christmas season. A big thank you also goes to the many people who minister to our community through music at our parish liturgies and who contributed their time and talent for this special event. Brenda Cavallin ~ Music & Youth Co-ordinator
World Leprosy Day~Sunday January 31st will be recognized in our parish with a 1:30 viewing of the 112 min. movie MOLOKAI: The Story of Father Damien. To deal with the leprosy problem in the Hawaiian Islands in 1872, sufferers were exiled to the barren isle of Molokai where they lived in miserable surroundings. Fr. Damien of Belgium was the 1st priest to go to Molokai. Damien earned the trust of the lepers and eventually his appeal for nuns and supplies resonated around the world. Eventually Damien got sick with the disease himself but he carried on working for the well-being of his fellow lepers until he crumbled during Mass and was taken to his own hospital to die. On Sunday October 11th, 2009 Pope Benedict officially proclaimed Blessed Damien De Veuster as a saint. Our own Fr. Jim Hutton was in St. Peter’s Square for the canonization. Fr. Jim is looking forward to sharing his experience with our community.
A big thank you goes out to Alex Catalano, Arthur Cavallin and Alina Tassone who for the time being suspended their own Kenya fundraising efforts in order to bake a total of 50 doz. homemade ginger snap cookies for Haitian relief. The cookies were sold to students at St. Francis School raising a total of $357.56 to be added to our parish donation to Haiti. Kate Manarin and Katherine Boyce are also busy baking dozens of cookies to sell at Holy Grounds Coffee House on Sunday January 31st, the Feast Day of St. John Bosco patron saint of youth. Don Bosco spent his life working with youth living on the streets of Turin, Italy. His work inspired the founding of the Salesians who continue to work with street kids all over the world including Haiti.

Drink, Steal, Swear and Lie: I met this guy while I was in Albuquerque and he has a motto he lives by everyday. He said listen carefully and live by these 4 rules: Drink, Steal, Swear & Lie. I was shaking my head ‘no’, but he then told me to listen while he explained his four rules. So, here they are: 1. Drink from the ‘everlasting cup’ every day. 2. Steal a moment to heal someone that is in worse shape than you are. 3. Swear that you will be a better person today than yesterday. 4. And last, but not least, when you lie down at night, Thank God. ~ I am not as good as I should be, I am not as good as I could be. But THANK GOD I am better than I used to be!!

Next Sunday is World Leprosy Day What is Leprosy? It is an infectious disease caused by the Mycobacterium leprae. For those at risk, exposure to prolonged coughing and sneezing from an infected individual can spread the disease. Once someone is infected, leprosy attacks the nervous system, deadening the body to pain. Wounds are often left untreated because the individual does not feel any pain and therefore infections are allowed to grow so severe that limbs may require amputation. Leprosy can also cause fingers and toes to stiffen and claw or curl inward, feet to lose their ability to arch and even blindness. The end result is horrific disfigurement and lifelong stigma. But, if caught in time, leprosy can be treated and completely cured before the disfigurement begins. The Leprosy Mission Canada serves the men, women and children who suffer the consequences of leprosy and similar diseases, offering them a cure and the courage and dignity to live among their community. If this is a charity you would deem worthwhile, donations can be sent to The Leprosy Mission Canada, 100 Mural St., Suite 100, Richmond Hill, ON L4B 1J3. Their toll free telephone number is 1-888-537-7679.
